Five references, five years, two verdicts — the axis is age and it predicts nothing on its own.

Somewhere between handing in a draft and defending it, almost every researcher is asked some version of the same question: aren't some of these references rather old? It is a fair question and a badly formed one. A 1962 paper can be the single strongest citation in a thesis or its weakest link, and the year on its own cannot tell you which. Reference currency is a real quality signal — but it measures something more specific than age.

There is no universal expiry date

The instinct to set a number is strong, and the numbers people reach for are suspiciously round: five years, ten years, "nothing before 2015". The appeal is obvious — a rule you can apply without reading anything. That is also the problem. A cutoff applied to a reference list treats a foundational methods paper and a superseded market statistic as the same kind of object, when the only thing they share is a date.

Ask instead what the reference is doing in your argument. A citation that establishes a definition, a method, or the origin of a debate is doing historical work, and historical work does not stale. A citation that supports a claim about the current state of something — prevalence, adoption, best practice, the size of a market — is doing empirical work about now, and every year that passes is a year in which "now" moved without it.

That distinction does more work than any cutoff. The same 2009 paper can be perfectly current as the origin of a framework and badly out of date as evidence for what practitioners do today. It is one reference and two different currency judgements, and only you can tell them apart, because only you know which sentence it is holding up.

Four things people mean by "old"

"Outdated" is used for at least four distinct conditions, which have different consequences and different fixes. Separating them is most of the work.

Superseded is the ordinary case: a newer edition, a later guideline, a second study with a larger sample. The reference was right and something has since replaced it. The fix is a swap, and it is usually uncontroversial.

Overtaken is subtler. Nothing replaced the work; the world simply moved past the claim it supports. Nobody published a correction to a 2016 survey of practitioner attitudes — it is just that the attitudes changed. There is often no direct replacement, and the honest fix may be to soften the claim rather than to re-cite it.

Withdrawn is categorically different and much more serious. A retracted paper is not old, it is void, and citing one approvingly is a defect no matter what year it carries. Age has nothing to do with it: a paper retracted last month is more dangerous to your argument than a sound paper from 1974.

Foundational is the category that ruins cutoff rules. Some references are load-bearing precisely because they are old. They are where a concept was defined, an instrument was validated, or a debate began. Replacing them with something recent does not modernise your thesis; it removes the provenance from your own argument and quietly misattributes an idea.

Currency is set by the field, not the calendar

How quickly a literature ages is a property of the discipline, and the spread is much wider than most cutoff advice admits. In fast-moving computational and clinical areas, a three-year-old benchmark can genuinely be stale — the method it compares against has been superseded twice. In mathematics, philosophy, classics and much of pure theory, a fifty-year-old citation raises no eyebrow at all, because results do not decay.

Most disciplines sit between those poles, and — more importantly — most theses contain several literatures at once. A dissertation on the clinical application of a machine-learning method is simultaneously citing a fast literature (the method), a moderate one (the clinical domain), and a slow one (the statistical foundations). One cutoff across that list will be wrong three ways at once. This is the single most common reason a blanket rule produces a worse reference list than no rule at all.

The right question is never "how old is this reference?" but "has anything happened since that changes what it is being used to say?"

That reframing is also what makes the job tractable. You cannot re-read a literature to check whether it moved. You can, for each ageing reference, ask a narrow, answerable question: is there a newer edition, a later guideline, a replication, a retraction, or a superseding study? Those have definite answers.

Where old references genuinely cost you marks

Three patterns reliably attract comment, and none of them is simply "there are old papers in the list".

The first is an old citation for a current claim — the sentence says "current practice is" and the support is fifteen years old. That is a mismatch between the tense of the claim and the age of the evidence, and it is visible to any examiner reading closely.

The second is a stale cluster. One old reference is a choice; a section where every citation stops at the same year suggests the literature search stopped then too. Clusters are noticed far more than individual references, because they look like a boundary rather than a decision.

The third is citing an edition that has been revised. If a standard text is in its ninth edition and you cite the fourth, the page numbers, the terminology, and sometimes the actual guidance have all moved. This is the most easily corrected and the most frequently missed, because the reference looks perfectly respectable.

A five-minute audit of your own list

Before reaching for any tool, this pass will find most of what an examiner would. Work from your reference list, not your chapters.

Sort by year and look at the tail. Take everything older than a decade and mark each one foundational or empirical. Foundational entries are done — they are meant to be old. Empirical ones need the question above asked of them individually.

Find your clusters. Scan for sections where the newest citation is several years old. That is where a reader will conclude your search has a boundary, and it is usually a chapter you drafted early and never revisited.

Check editions on anything canonical. Textbooks, standards, clinical guidelines, style manuals and statistical references are the usual suspects. A newer edition almost always exists, and the cost of citing the old one is disproportionate to how easy it is to fix.

Check the tense of the sentence, not the reference. Anywhere you have written "currently", "recent", "modern" or "state of the art", look at what is supporting it. This single pass catches the mismatch examiners comment on most.

What a checker can tell you, and what it cannot

An automated check is good at exactly the parts that are mechanical and tedious: it can tell you that a work has a later edition, that a preprint you cited has since been published in a journal, that a DOI now resolves somewhere different, that a paper has been retracted, and that a citation in your text has no matching entry in your list at all. Those are facts about the record, and they are checkable.

What it cannot do is decide whether a fifty-year-old paper is the right citation for your sentence. That judgement needs the argument, and the argument is yours. This is why every correction we surface is a proposal you accept or reject rather than an edit applied on your behalf — the tool knows what changed in the record, and you know what your sentence is claiming. Neither of those is sufficient alone.

It follows that the most useful output is not a score but a list of specific, answerable questions: this reference has a newer edition, this preprint is now published, this entry appears nowhere in your text. You can settle each of those in seconds, which is a very different experience from being told your literature is "outdated" and left to work out where.
